A nonhormonal anti-inflammatory agent for use in horses only. Phenylbutazone is a synthetic, non-hormonal, anti-inflammatory agent that is indicated in the management of musculoskeletal conditions in horses such as osteoarthritis.

Product Description

Phenylbutazone is a synthetic, non-hormonal, anti-inflammatory agent that is indicated for the relief of inflammatory conditions in horses. It comes in three forms:

  • Paste: Apple-flavored paste 20-gm tube. Each 3 mL marking on the plunger contains 1 g of Phenylbutazone.
  • Powder: Each 10 grams of powder contains 1 gram of phenylbutazone. Citrus-flavored powder is sweetened with natural sugar, and is easily top-dressed on the horse's ration. 1 level scoop is equal to 1 gram of phenylbutazone. Includes scoop-- 1 level scoop is equal to 1gram of medication.
  • Tablets: Tablets may vary in appearance. Most phenylbutazone tablets are scored.

Active Ingredients

Phenylbutazone. Phenylbutazone is designated as a class 4 substance by the ARCI.

Directions for User

  • Paste: The usual oral dose in horses is 1 or 2gm per 500lbs, but not to exceed 4gm daily. Use a relatively high dose for the first 48 hours, then reduce gradually to a maintenance dose. Maintain the lowest dose capable of producing desired clinical response.
  • Powder: Administer orally on a small amount of palatable feed and mix well. Follow veterinarian's instruction for use.
  • Tablets: Please follow veterinarian's instructions for use. Give with food.

Special Precautions

This medication should not be used in animals allergic to it. If no significant clinical response is evident after 5 days, re-evaluate diagnosis and therapeutic approach. This medication is not for use in horses intended for food. Keep out of reach of children.

Do not use in pets that are dehydrated, on diuretics or have ulcers. Do not use in animals with kidney, liver or heart disease. Do not use in animals with bleeding disorders. Do not use in pregnant or nursing animals. Do not use in cats. Do not use with other NSAIDs such as aspirin or Rimadyl, corticosteroids such as prednisone, or other ulcer causing medications. Use with caution when given with phenytoin, warfarin, sulfonamides and glipizide. Use with caution when given with digoxin, barbiturates, rifampin, chlorpheniramine or diphenhydramine. Always tell your veterinarian and pharmacist what other medications your pet is taking. Give this medication with food.
